Rodney E. Harris

1843 - 1877
Hometown: Steuben County, New York

The brother of Marine “Dora” Harris, Rodney was born in Tyrone, New York but the family eventually moved to Steuben County.

He served is in the Company A of the 107th Regiment New York Volunteers with Bath boys Joseph P. Faulkner and Frank Smead, both who all corresponded with Charles Brother, who took keen interest in the movements of the 107th.

Rodney enlisted on August 13, 1862, at the age of 18 under the command of Col. R. V. Vanvalkenburg.

Along with other battles, he fought in these:

  • Antietam

  • Chancellorsville

  • Atlanta

  • Bentonville

He was discharged in Washington, DC on June 5, 1865.

Rodney was, like Charley, part of the Charter Members of Bath Hook & Ladder Fire Company in November 1867. He ran a mercantile business in Liberty (now Cohocton) with his brother, M. S. but in April 1875 moved to Naples, Ontario County. Eventually settling in Cohocton, living on Maple Avenue, and by 1871 served as the town clerk.

The R. E. Harris GAR Post No. 240 in Cohocton, NY was named the Rodney. For nine years he worked along his brother Morris in retail.

He died in Naples, Ontario County, NY on April 21, 1877, of typhoid pneumonia at the age of 33.
