Civil war Marine &

railway Postal Clerk

1844-1917

Publishing company Charley Brother, LLC was established in 2020 by Christine Friesel, in honor of her great-great grandfather, Civil War Marine and railway postal clerk Charles Brother.

After dabbling with creative writing in college, Friesel went to work at the public library. There, she improved in areas of research and procrastination. There, she failed to answer the call to be a saint, or at least to write about it.

In 2009 she received a call from her mother about an old, battered box, discovered in the basement. Inside was the diary of her long-forgotten ancestor. Dumbfounded, she asked: Who is Charley Brother?

Friesel claimed to be moved by the life of Charles and his daughter, Frances. She said she was never the same: disturbed, humiliated, and all that and then some—even pursued by that old siren: But would she ever pick up her cross?

In gratitude of her elders—and her guardian angel—she writes short Catholic fiction so that she can get on with it.
