Miles Oviatt

18401880
Hometown: Olean, Cattaraugus County, NY

Miles M. Oviatt was on the USS Vanderbilt with Charley Brother and on the USS Brooklyn during the Battle of Mobile Bay with Gregg and other boys from the Finger Lakes. He also kept a diary during the Civil War.

Published by White Mane Books and edited by his descendant, Mary Pat Livingston, the diary came out in 1998: Civil War Marine at Sea: the Diary of Medal of Honor Recipient Miles M. Oviatt.

His Medal of Honor was donated to the National Museum of the Marine Corps with the help of military historian David M. Sullivan.

Livingston was impressed by little recognition paid to his heroic service back home, even in his obituary, concluding that he kept somethings to himself.
