Very good looking in his Naval Academy uniform, was already prepared for his role. The Howell family attended the Episcopal Church with the Brother family. John was the nephew of Congressman Ed Howell, who, although a Democrat, was still a friend to the Brother family.

Howell inspired Charles Brother to join the Navy and the Marines. After the Civil War, Howell invented the Howell Torpedo.
