Towle was 26 years old when he signed up for service in the Marines and was commissioned Assistant paymaster in the US Navy.

Before the war Towle’s parents lived in Bath. Towle began his career clerking with R. O. Smith in Olean, near the home town of other Marines and Brother’s future shipmates: Bandfield, Oviatt, and Williard Smith.

His Great Grandfather Samuel Towle (1737 – 1793) was a patriot in the Revolutionary War.

Towle had two sisters – Sarah and Olive.

After the war, he married the sister of Charley Brother, Mary, and they moved to Clinton, Iowa. There he opened a dry goods store and became active in the Ancient Order of United Workmen, becoming the Grand master of the State.
