About Frances Toyne

Frances Toyne (1880–1962) was born in Iowa and raised in Bath, New York, at the Davenport Home for Orphan Girls. Moving back to Iowa, she soon married, moved frequently, and tried to settle down. She repeatedly had to pack her belongings and set up her household around South Bend, Indiana, trying to make it in the city. Moving back to rural life, she found her natural stride and, finally, a real home.
